"The Greenville Advocate
A Fatal Difficulty at Fort Deposit
May 4, 1887

On the 27th ult.,a serious and fatal difficulty occurred between James
Barganier and John Reynolds, growing out of an old feud of several years
standing.

A correspondent of the advertiser writes that paper the following partieulars
(sic) of
the unfortunate affair.

The fight yesterday began in McPhereon's drug store between James F Barganier
and Willie Reynolds. In short time John Reynolds was engaged and then Mac
Barganier appeared on the ground with Winchester in hand. While all these
parties were scufiling (sic) and fighting on the floor a pistol in the hands of
James
Barganier was fired twice. One shot passed through the floor doing no damage,
but the other took effect in the shoulder of Mr J. W. Avinger in the left side
and passed around the body coming out at the back, making a very severe wound.
Both of these parties were attempting to separate the combatants. After these
shots all parties broke loose and left the room. On the sidewalk the fight
was
renewed between J. F. Barganier and John Reynolds. After a time John Reynolds
broke loose and ran around the house followed by Barganier who fired a shot at
him as he ran. On reaching the rear of the store Reynolds entered through an
open window, and was going toward the front of the store when Barganier fired
the fatal shot through the window. The ball struck Reynolds above the small
of
the back, and ranging upwards passed through his body and peneyrated (sic) a
heavy zink oil stand, tearing a large hole in the tank. Barganier then passed
on
around the house and came again to the front door. Both the Reynolds were
behind the counter. Barganier was met by Willie Reynolds who attempted to
prevent his going behind the counter. Barganier fired a shot at young
Reynolds
while thus engaged, which fortunately missed him. Thus ended the shooting.
John Reynolds died at his residence about two miles from town this morning at
11 o'clock.

Barganier waived examination before Squire McQueen and was taken to
Hayneville,by Deputy Sheriff Haines, to await the action of the grand jury. It
is very gratifying to all covcerned that today after the trails had taken place
Mac Barganier and Willie Reynolds , sons of the principals in this affair met
and shook hands, mutually agreeing that this should be the last of the enmity
between the parties".

The following article for MASONIC LODGE 680 was extracted from the book, NEW
SUMMERFIELD HISTORICAL MEMORIES. The book is located in the Rusk Library, Rusk,
Cherokee County, Texas. The article was provided by Shirley and John Grammer of
LaVernia, Texas.

"MASONIC LODGE 680
Since there was no Masonic Lodge in Summerfield in its early days, many men of
the community were members of either the Griffin or Lone Star Masonic Lodges.
The Lone Star Lodge was moved to Ponta after the Lone Star community became
inactive as a trade and social center. The Masons of New Summerfield continued
to meet at Ponta. In 1962 the Ponta Lodge moved to New Summerfield where a nice
concrete tile building was erected on a lot a short distance South of the
school campus. It is still an active lodge and holds regular meetings there.

A partial list of "fifty -year members" of the lodge include Dr. J. T.
Greenwood, Ray Murphy, Marvin Gill, Ray Heath, Dr. P. E. Jones, ED MAGEE and
WILL MAGEE. Other early settlers of Summerfield who were Masons at Griffin or
Lone Star were: Laban Dodson, J. W. Duty, Matthew Tennison, Dr. W. R. 'Rube'
Tennison, Jim J. Gill, Matthew Gill, Albert Gallatin Tipton, Isaac Lockhart
Newsom, Rev. J. W. Loftis, Jasper N. Greenwood, G. C. McLeod, Norton Walley and
Tant Brazier.

The New Summerfield Masonic Lodge now has a large number of local members as
well as some members from nearby communities.

Research Notes: There is a "James F. Magee" buried in Stryker Cemetery, Polk
County, Texas with a birth date of 1864 and a death date of 1941. Rebecca Magee

General Notes: James and Cyrena celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on 25
January 1943. There was a picture made of them that day with that inscription
on the reverse side.

Linda Jones Hewitt, granddaughter of James and Cyrena Wallace, gave a brief
history to those present at the Wallace Family Reunion held at Jourdanton,
Atascosa County, Texas on October 11, 2003, regarding the migration of the
Wallace family from Cherokee County, Texas to South Texas in 1923. She says
that they came with their families to Jourdanton by train with livestock, farm
equipment, household belongings, etc. There were a number of families that
came, including: Darby, Birdwell, Farley, Jones, Holmes, Wiggins, Wallace and
possibly others. Jesse Holmes and Alyne Holmes Crane, two survivors of this
trip, were in attendance at the reunion and shared their memories of the trip.

James and Cyrena left Cherokee County, Texas in 1923 and came to Atascosa
County, buying and settling on a farm south of Dobrowolski. Grandson, Billy
Wallace and wife, Barbara, still reside on this property (The Pleasanton
Express, 29 Sep 2004 Edition).

James Christopher played the fiddle to entertain the family and at dances. He
also taught sacred harp singing. Sacred harp singing was taught in the early
part of the 19th Century in the South. When churches had revival meetings they
would have singing schools in the morning. Families would send their older
children to learn to read music and sing by the shaped notes....all the hymnals
had shaped notes. (Joyce Allison, 8 Oct 2005).

"Forsythe Family Page:

The Forsythe Surname
In modern times Forsythe is a Scotch name, but according to some it has a
history that stretches back to France and to Scandinavia.

Northern Ireland and the Journey to America
The Forsythes were one of the families that emigrated from Scotland to Northern
Ireland in the 1600's to avoid war and hunger in their native land. After about
a hundred years, many Scotsmen became dissatisfied with Northern Ireland and
emigrated to America where they came to be known as the "Scots-Irish."
One of those emigrants to America was David Forsythe who came to American with
his brother William at the same time another brother moved to France. David was
born about 1735 at Kiliscovan. According to the Ulster Names Project,
Kiliscovan is probably a townland named Skillyscolban in parish Dromore in
County Down. Until 1830 it was known as Killyscolban, which means "wood of the
thatching pegs". A townland is the smallest administrative division in Ireland
and is very ancient. Parishes are divided into townlands, baronies into
parishes, and counties into baronies.
David eloped with and married an Irish lass named Margaret McGibbon, who was
said to be a native of Dublin, Ireland who was visiting relatives near
Kiliscovan. Shortly after their marriage they sailed for America.
On the ocean voyage to America, Margaret nearly died, and David nursed her back
to health after their arrival.

Virginia
David and Margaret initially settled in Virginia, in what is now West Virginia
before moving to Kentucky.

Floyd's Fork Kentucky
David and Margaret Forsythe settled at Floyd's Fork, Kentucky where they raised
a family consisting of the following children:
1. Turpin
2. Thomas, born 1775, died 1809
3. James, born 1777, died 1821, maried Jennie Sturgeon
4. Nancy, born 1779, died 1851, married Thomas Daniels
5. Elizabeth (Betsy), born 1781, married John Bridges
6. David, Jr., born 1783, died 1868, married Margaret Hulett, then Bessie
Prichard, then Rachal Cambell
7. Letitia, born 1786, married William Featherngill
8. John Forsythe, born 1789 at Bunker Hill, (West) Virginia, died 1829 at Bay
St. Louis, Mississippi, sheriff of Adams Co., Mississippi, married Mary Harman,
then Mary Hardin
9. Margareet (Peggy), born 1793, died 1863, married Clark Tucker
10. Mary (Polly), born 1794, died 1835, married Joseph Featherngill
11. Robert Forsythe, born 1796, died 1870, married Nancy Prichard
12. Maria, born 1799 married Thomas Pettingill, then Joseph McCarthy
After David's death in 1808 at Floyd's Fork, Margaret moved to Franklin,
Indiana where she died.

Natchez, Adams County, Mississippi
One of David and Margaret's sons, John Forsythe, left Kentucky in search of his
fortune in the Mississippi frontier town of Natchez. Eventually he became a
prosperous man and was elected sheriff of Adams County. He lived at Washington,
which was a retreat from the chaos of Natchez.

Texas Revolution and Early Texas
John's son Thomas H. W. Forsythe was recruited in New Orleans to fight for
Texas independence. Thomas participated in the Battle of Bexar in which the
Texians captured San Antonio and the Alamo the September preceding its
recapture by Santa Anna in the Battle of the Alamo. Thomas missed that fateful
fight, and there is no further information about his participation in the
Revolution. Thomas received a land grant as a result of his service.
Thomas lived briefly in Sabine County, and then in Angelina County where he
married Syrena White, the daughter of Martin D. and Sarah Dollarhide White, who
had previously been married to Umphries Chappell. Thomas and Syrena settled
permanently at Alabama Creek in eastern Trinity County where he served as a
Hard Shell Baptist minister. Both Thomas and Syrena died in an epidemic about
1865 and are said to have been buried in the yard of their home at Alabama
Creek".

"White Family Page:

The White Surname
The White surname probably refers to the light complexion of early Whites.

James Taylor White and Elizabeth Powe White of Virginia
James Taylor White was born in 1710 and lived in Virginia. He married Elizabeth
Powe. They had the following children:
1. James, born 1736 (see below).
2. William, married Sophia Davenport. Their daughter Nancy married David
Harman. Their descendant David Harman was at the Alamo but was sent to ask
General Sam Houston for reinforcements. Houston refused to let him return, and
he thus missed the final battle at the Alamo.
3. Reuben, maried Millie Allen.
4. John, married Sarah Gamble/Gambrill.

James White of Natchez, Mississippi
James White who was born in 1736 and died in 1784 at Natchez, Mississippi. He
married Jerusha [Davenport?]. James and Jerusha had the following children:
1. Reuben, born about 1765 and died before 1828.
2. Elizabeth, who married John Holloway, who was killed by Indians near Natchez
in 1781. It appears that James and Jerusha White also moved to Louisiana.
3. James (often called James, Jr.), who married Mary "Polly" Paul in Rapides
Parish. Among their children was Joseph, who lived most of his life in
Catahoula Parish.

Reuben White of Catahoula Parish, Louisiana
James and Jerusha's son Reuben married Elizabeth _____. It appears that Reuben
lived at Natchez until as late as 1795 (birth of Martin D. White) and then
moved to Louisiana. He and his family are listed in the Rapides Post census of
1799. He had a claim for 558 acres on the Red River and 677 acres on the south
side of Catahoula Lake. In 1820 he is listed in Catahoula Parish. It appears
that about the same time sons of James' sister Elizabeth moved to the same
areas along with James Taylor White where they engaged in the cattle
business. This James Taylor White was probably Reuben's son".
Reuben and Elizabeth's children were:
"1. Nancy Matilda White, who was born in 1791 and married William Earle.
2. Martin D. White (see below)
3. James Taylor White who was born in 1798 and married Nancy _____.
4. Benjamin L. White who was born in 1814. After a first marriage to an unknown
woman, he married Harriett James. Benjamin served as sheriff of Trinity Co.,
Texas.
Rueben probably died in Louisiana about 1822-23 since Elizabeth accompanied her
sons Martin and Benjamin to Texas in those years.

Martin D. White, Texas Patriot
Martin D. White was born April 17, 1795 in Louisiana. The "D" is believed to
stand for Davenport, a family with which the Whites were associated through the
generations. He first married Isabella Brownlee. Second he married Sarah (Sally)
Dollarhide who was born July 22, 1789, probably in Pulaski Co., Kentucky.
The children of Martin and Sarah Dollarhide White are as follows:
1. Syrena, born 1814 (see below).
2. Elizabeth, born about 1817, who married William Williams.
3. James B. White, born 1831.
Martin D. White moved to Sabine County, Texas in 1822 along with his mother
Elizabeth. Brother Benjamin White joined him in 1823. Their mother Elizabeth
also moved to Texas about the same time. In 1835 Martin received a grant of 1
league (4,428.4 acres) of land in Sabine County from the Mexican government.
Martin and Sarah White, William and Elizabeth White Williams (daughter) and
Umprhies and Sarena White Chappel (daughter), Elizabeth White (mother) and
James White (brother) were all listed in the 1835 census for Sabine, Texas. As
was required by Mexican law, the religion of all was listed as "Catholic".
He joined the Texas army of General Sam Houston from Sabine County and in 1836
served in Col. Edward Burleson's First Regiment of Texas Volunteers the
decisive Battle of San Jacinto at which Texas won its independence from Mexico.
For his service he received a bounty land grant. It should be pointed out that
Martin White is not listed on the roster of participants at San Jacinto, and
the foregoing information comes from McDaniel.
Martin White was deeply involved in public affairs in East Texas. He served on
the Board of Land Commissioners at Milam, Texas, and then as Justice of the
Peace in Nacogdoches and Angelina Counties (Angelina was formed from
Nacogdoches County in 1846). He was at Marion in Angelina County in 1848. By
1850 he had moved to Alabama Creek in Houston (later Trinity) County. The
Whites were in the 1850 census for Houston County (Trinity County was formed
from Houston County in 1850). Alabama Creek is a major tributary of the Neches
River in northeast Trinity County and was named for the Alabama Indians whose
village was located on the creek when early settlers arrived. In Trinity County
he also served as Justice of the Peace. His brother Benjamin L. White served as
sheriff of Trinity County.
Martin D. White died March 11, 1851 at Alabama Creek.

Syrena White Forsythe
Martin and Sally's daughter Syrena was born in Catahoula Parish, Louisiana in
1814 and died in 1865. She married first Umphrey Chappell and had a child born
in 1834. Her second husband was Thomas Harman W. Forsythe, an early Texas
minister, who also lived at Alabama Creek".

Burial Notes: The funeral service for Gladys Wallace Jones was held in the
Harmony Baptist Church near Elmendorf, Texas.
General Notes: Gladys lived in San Antonio, Texas. Before her death she lived
with her daughter, Linda Hewitt, who also lives in San Antonio.

Gladys and her husband, John Louis Jones, had only one child, Linda. Gladys
said that she was married 15 years before she had Linda. She also stated that
she "has been a widow for about 42 years now (2000) and has never remarried".

Gladys was the "Matriarch of the Wallace Reunion" until the year she died. Due
to her excellent organizational skills and strong sense of "family
togetherness" the Wallace Family Reunion has been held on the second Saturday
in October in Jourdanton, Texas for many years. The descendants of James
Christopher Wallace and Cyrena Kenley Wallace have made new acquaintances,
renewed old acquaintances, and enjoyed the fellowship of other Wallace family
members. Years ago the place where the Wallace Reunion was held alternated
between Reklaw, Cherokee County, Texas and Jourdanton, Atascosa County, Texas
and lasted Saturday and Sunday. The first Wallace Reunion James and I attended
was in Reklaw, Texas in 1979. The Wallace family made us feel right at home;
they were all so friendly. Aunt Rosie Holmes, Aunt Gladys Jones, Aunt Lula
Wallace, Jimmie Wallace Bowling, and Laveeda Kirk are some of the names that I
can specifically remember from that day. Before the day was over, someone had
our oldest daughter, Sheila, who was ten at the time up on the stage singing
"Jesus Loves Me". The Wallace Reunion now lasts only one day and is in
Jourdanton, Texas. One of Gladys' last wishes before her death was that the
Wallace Reunion continue to be held annually. Her daughter, Linda Jones Hewitt,
has continued the organization of the Wallace Reunion for the years 2001-2005.
In 2005, the name of "The Wallace Reunion" was changed to "The Harlan-Wallace
Reunion". Officers were elected and Linda Jones Hewitt became the first
president of "The Harlan-Wallace Reunion" (Margaret Geyer Grammer).
